INSULATED GLASS UNITS

WITH WARM EDGE

Until recently, aluminium spacer bars were widely used in the construction of IGUs. Aluminium is highly conductive and has an exceptionally high thermal energy loss.

With ever-improving window frames and glazing systems and an emphasis on thermal efficiency, the market has seen a huge switch to warm edge technology.

Reducing energy consumption is undoubtedly a must. This switch has resulted in the requirement for windows with increasingly lower thermal transmittance values, Uw [W/m2 K]. The warm edge used today in insulating glass units has played an important part in achieving these objectives.

objectives

Warm edge products help to minimize energy loss.
Warm edge spacer bars significantly lower the temperature differential between the centre and edge of the unit and up to 94% reduced heat loss (or heat gain) at the external edge of a window.

CRITERIA ACCORDING TO EN ISO 10077-1

Various spacer bars have been used within insulated glass units. Some were more thermally efficient than aluminium spacer bars, however, did not meet the industry criteria. With a major enhancement in the design standards, the below parameters were set in which the spacer bar had to fulfil to be classified as warm edge.

Σ (diλi) ≤ 0,007 W/K

where:

di – thickness of partition material

λi – television of conductivity of material in W/mK

Example: 2(d1λ1) + (d2λ2) ≤ 0,007 W/K

The table below shows how particular types of bars fulfil the revised criteria.

Reduce heat loss with

warm edge technology spacer bar

Double glazed windows fitted with warm edge spacer bars have a warmer internal edge temperature of up to 65% which, helps to improve the thermal efficiency of the window and reduce the risk of condensation.

Warm edge technology can help to reduce condensation on your sealed unit by up to 70%. This reduction in moisture almost eliminates the chance of mould growth and potentially harmful bacteria.

Contributing to the environment, heat-saving can help to reduce the heat consumption or air conditioning requirements of a home which in turn lowers carbon emissions and can help save money on fuel bills.
